Cambodia's retail landscape has undergone significant growth and now offers a wide array of supermarkets that cater to the diverse needs of its Cambodian residents and expatriate community as well as international visitors.

Phnom Penh as the capital is the most populous and diverse and as such provides a greater variety of supermarkets but more brands are being established in most urban centres and popular cities such as Sihanoukville, Siem Reap, Kampot etc.

Whether you're looking for local produce, international imported brands, or a one-stop shopping experience, Cambodia's best supermarkets aim to provide convenience, quality, and a range of products to satisfy every shopper. The supermarkets in Cambodia cater for a very diverse expatriate and local customer base and stock imported international and regional products as well as locally produced fresh and packaged goods.

There are also several great one-off supermarkets as well as cornerstones and convenience store chains such as 7-Eleven, Smile Mart, Big C and many others that service local neighbourhoods. There has been an increase in the number of specialist stores which might include butchers, cheese and delicatessen outlets, organic fruit and vegetable stores etc.

In this article, we will explore and focus only on the top supermarket chains in Cambodia and don't include the local wet markets, or the online retailers which have also grown in popularity and deserve a look from consumers.

The Best 5 Supermarkets in Cambodia

AEON Mall Supermarket & MaxValu Express

Aeon Mall is a prominent brand in Cambodia's retail sector, with its larger shopping megamalls among the largest and most comprehensive shopping experiences in Cambodia. The Japanese company has multiple locations across the country, including Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and its grocery outlets are in the AEON Malls offering a wide range of groceries, preserves food and beverages, fresh meat and seafood, to clothing, electronics, and household items.

The AEON shopping malls also have accompanying food courts with a selection of local, regional, and international cuisine.

AEON MaxValu and MaxValu Express are smaller retail outlets that offer a small selection but still stock essential groceries and supplies for convenience.

They also provide customer loyalty cards and Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) or favourable terms for approved customers.

Lucky Supermarket

Lucky Supermarket is one of the longest-running supermarkets in Cambodia and one of the most expansive. They can be regarded as one of the leading supermarket chains in Cambodia among local and international shoppers and have dozens of outlets in major cities like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville and offer a diverse selection of local and international products, including fresh produce, meats, dairy, household goods, and more.

A decade ago they were the go-to store for expats but there is a healthy level of competition in the retail space. However, Lucky still remains reasonably priced, and with a good selection of fresh produce, Western and Asian food as well as home essentials from toiletries, kitchen goods etc

There are several smaller Lucky Express supermarkets which have popped up to serve local communities too which have a smaller selection but have the essentials for groceries and a small selection of Lucky Premium Supermarkets which are more high-end.

Thai Huot Supermarket

Thai Huot Supermarket claims to be the customer's choice for USA and European products and they have several locations in Phnom Penh and could be among the longest-running supermarkets in Cambodia, having formed in 1994!

Thai Huot caters to the growing demand for international products but also provides the usual staple of fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables, meats, and household items. The Cambodian supermarket prides itself on offering a clean and convenient shopping environment.

Thai Huot has had a reputation among expats for offering a greater selection of dairy, and packaged consumable items but all of the supermarkets do tend to offer similar growing ranges of products -  both local and international. There are also many more boutique local sellers which are stocked in the supermarkets from peanut butter, to cheeses, frozen pizzas, and speciality meats.

Super Duper Supermarket

Super Duper Supermarket has not been around as long as some other supermarket chains on this list, but it quickly has established itself as a popular choice for many expats and the middle-class to affluent shoppers due to the extensive range of Australian and USA groceries that are not available anywhere else but also for its stock of frozen foods and selection of cheeses, dips, dairy items, deli meats and more.

The stores are also among the most modern and were a refreshing addition to the local supermarkets in the Cambodian capital. The price range is on the higher end but they arguably have more imported and higher quality ranges of goods available. Super Duper Supermarket prides itself on its unique shopping experience, combining convenience, affordability, and a diverse product range; they are also open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Chip Mong Supermarket

Relative newcomer Chip Mong Supermarket, which is part of the Chip Mong conglomerate, can be found in their new megamalls in Phnom Penh but they also have Express versions throughout the city.

The modern grocery store also carries a wide range of local and imported items as well as fresh meat, fish, and cheese in addition to frozen foods. They also offer a range of all-natural and K-beauty items and have embraced e-commerce with their website listing products which can be ordered via delivery apps.

Supermarkets Overview Cambodia

Based on reports from PROFITENCE, & Standard Insights;

  • Many supermarket businesses use an omnichannel sales strategy and customers can purchase products both at physical stores and online stores. On websites and mobile apps, companies offer self-service or are partnered with delivery companies.
  • Last-mile services at the border & in rural areas are limited.
  • Food delivery apps are preferred when Cambodian-based online shoppers search for food or groceries even though most respondents still prefer shopping for groceries in person (64%) likely due to its perishability.

Cambodia's best supermarket chains offer shoppers convenience, quality, and a diverse range of products but it still pays to shop around as a consumer in Cambodia as there are always ongoing promotions and the variety of imported products can vary.
