With the increasing demand for Internet usage in Cambodia, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is emerging as a new option attracting significant user interest. This latest generation of Wi-Fi not only improves connection speeds but also reduces network congestion and minimises interruptions, especially when multiple devices are connected simultaneously.

Wi-Fi 6: A New Wireless Standard for Modern Needs

Wi-Fi 6, also known as the 802.11ax standard, was developed to address the limitations of previous generations like Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). This technology is particularly beneficial in high-density environments with many connected devices, such as smart homes, crowded offices, schools, and shopping centres.

One of the standout features of Wi-Fi 6 is its theoretical maximum speed of up to 9.6 Gbps. This figure is significantly higher than that of previous standards, allowing users to perform multiple online tasks more smoothly. However, the more critical advantage lies in its ability to efficiently manage multiple simultaneous connections, thanks to technologies like OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) and MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple Input, Multiple Output). These advancements help reduce network congestion, particularly in areas with a high density of devices.

Wi-Fi 6 also significantly reduces network latency, resulting in noticeably better performance for activities that require quick responsiveness, such as online gaming, video calling, or livestreaming. Additionally, Wi-Fi 6’s Target Wake Time (TWT) technology allows devices such as smartphones and IoT devices to conserve energy, thereby extending battery life.

In terms of security, Wi-Fi 6 utilises the WPA3 standard — the latest security technology — offering users enhanced protection against hackers and other types of cyberattacks.

Wi-Fi 6 and the Opportunity for More Diverse Internet Connectivity

In Cambodia, Wi-Fi 6 is seen as a solution to significantly enhance user experience, especially in areas where many devices are used simultaneously. With its ability to handle a variety of tasks efficiently, this technology is likely to soon become a popular choice not only among individual users but also for businesses, schools, and public spaces.

Which Carriers are Offering Wi-Fi 6 in Cambodia?

According to technology news sources, Metfone is currently the only carrier in Cambodia offering Wi-Fi 6 services. However, it is highly likely that in the near future, this technology will become more widely available, driven by competition among other Internet service providers in the market.
