Techo International Airport Supports Cathay Pacific During Typhoon in Hong Kong

As Super Typhoon Ragasa disrupted operations across East Asia, Hong Kong’s flag carrier, Cathay Pacific, repositioned 13 aircraft from its fleet for parking at Techo International Airport. Between September 23 and 25, the airline diverted several of its Boeing 777-300s, Airbus A330s, and Airbus A321neos to the new airport, which began operations on September 9.
Techo International Airport accommodated the aircraft while maintaining regular operations. The move highlighted the airport’s readiness and capacity to support international fleets during regional disruptions.
“Cathay Pacific’s decision to station over a dozen aircraft in Phnom Penh highlights the trust between Hong Kong and Cambodia. Techo International Airport is fully prepared to provide safe and reliable services, both in daily operations and in times of crisis such as the current meteorological conditions that affected Hong Kong and East Asia,” said Pung Kheav Se, Chairman of OCIC and CAIC.
The support also underscored OCIC’s growing ties with Hong Kong. Canadia Group has been expanding its international presence and in July 2025 opened a representative office in Hong Kong for OCIC and for Canadia Bank to strengthen economic links with the Greater Bay Area.
In 2024, Hong Kong exported about USD 706 million worth of goods to Cambodia, while imports from Cambodia reached roughly USD 280 million. Cambodia’s economy grew by 5.5 per cent in the same year, reflecting steady economic momentum.
Techo International Airport is a Cambodian-built project developed with international partners and designed by the British architectural firm Foster + Partners, also known for designing Hong Kong International Airport. As a 4F-category facility, it is designed to handle the world’s largest passenger and cargo aircraft. The airport’s design combines Khmer heritage with contemporary forms and a spirit of serenity inspired by Cambodia’s cultural traditions.
In its first phase, the airport is expected to serve up to 15 million passengers annually and will soon welcome additional international carriers including Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines. New direct flights between Phnom Penh and Abu Dhabi by Etihad, starting October 3, and between Phnom Penh and Istanbul by Turkish Airlines, starting December 10, have already been announced.
