For investors with surplus funds, the Cambodia Securities Exchange (CSX) presents an alternative to traditional savings methods, such as through bank deposits, investing in gold or real estate, or by starting a business. Experts suggest that investments in the securities market can potentially lead to gains of at least 10 per cent in the long run.

The Securities & Exchange Regulator of Cambodia (SERC) and Royal Group Securities (RGS) co-hosted an investor forum on ‘Long-Term Investing in the Securities Market’ on May 9, 2025, at the Non-Bank Financial Services Authority (FSA) Building, specifically for government officials.

Seng Chanthoeun, CEO of RGS, addressed the shift from traditional investments, like gold or real estate, to stocks, emphasising the increased accessibility and security of the Cambodian stock market for trading, buying, selling, and long-term savings.

He highlighted the economic benefits of stock investments, explaining how capital injected into enterprises fuels job creation, boosts state revenue, and stimulates broader economic activity.

While banking services are now widely adopted in Cambodia, the cultivation of investment habits and establishment of investment accounts are still in the early stages. Chanthoeun stressed that it is important for everyone to build their investment habits and stay informed about current events.

A local bourse like the CSX can be a starting point for savings. Stock prices on the CSX do not fluctuate as much as those of larger foreign exchanges, making it a more ideal platform for savers. Additionally, it can be easier for investors to gain an understanding of local companies vs. international ones.

Through the Cambodian government's partnership with the Korean Stock Exchange (which owns 45 per cent of the CSX), registration and trading can be done remotely via applications such as 'Psar Hun' and 'CSX Trade'. To get started, investors only need to create a trading account.

During the forum, H.E. Sou Socheat, Director General of the SERC, emphasised that investors can start with even a minimal investment into stocks, then later move on to bonds if they can gather a larger amount of funds.

In 2014, there were only two companies listed on the CSX. As of early 2025, there are now 20 listed companies on the exchange, along with a USD 100 million subordinated bond, and another USD 50 million green bond.

"With the infrastructure that we have and diversified products like in other markets, even though our market is small, I think that our investors can put confidence in us and inject their cash into the market,” H.E. Sou Socheat told B2B Cambodia. “The CSX has already prepared the market and is ready to accept the confidence of investors.”

For those looking to start investing, H.E. Sou Socheat advises looking into the domestic market, which is 100 per cent protected under Cambodian law.

"If you are an investor in Cambodia and looking to invest overseas, the first question to ask yourself is how you are going to be protected by law. If you invest in Cambodia, Cambodian law protects you 100 per cent, our legal mechanisms are already in place. Another thing to consider is that the bigger the market, the higher the fluctuation, and the process is much more complex," he added.

“That's why I say trading closer is better. After you have success here, you can jump further to higher-return markets, but investors should remember: the bigger the return, the bigger the risk," the SERC Director General concluded.
