Over the last thirty years, Cambodia has experienced a significant decline in neonatal mortality rates. Between 2000 and 2014, Cambodia achieved a considerable reduction in neonatal mortality (46 per cent), with the death rate dropping from 37 deaths per 1000 live births in 2000, to 22 in 2015, and eight in 2022.

Similarly, the Czech Republic was previously reporting 10 deaths per 1000 live births in 1982, which decreased over the decades to just one, according to the most recent available data from 2021. Czech top specialists are now transferring the crucial know-how behind this achievement to Cambodia.

Central to this Czech-Cambodian collaboration is the 'Czech Perinatology Hands to Cambodia' project, which was first announced by the Czech Development Agency in 2021, and led by the Vita et Futura Foundation, who brought together a dedicated team of medical experts from Prague. The project's primary goal is to establish a new perinatology centre in Cambodia, inspired by the successful healthcare model in the Czech Republic. Beyond building the physical infrastructure, the project also aims to:

  • Introduce new digital healthcare solutions for maternal care.
  • Build comprehensive training programs for medical staff.
  • Transform the National Paediatric Hospital (NPH) into a certified training hub.

This Czech-Cambodian partnership embodies a deep commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare services, and also reflects a crucial investment into the future of Cambodia's healthcare landscape. By harnessing Czech medical expertise and technological advancements, this collaboration aims to enhance health outcomes for mothers and children, and set a new standard for international healthcare cooperation in Cambodia.

Decreasing neonatal and perinatal mortality is one of the main goals of the Czech Development Cooperation to Cambodia. Moreover, this collaboration aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to reduce neonatal and perinatal mortality by 2030, with the Cambodian government on board.
