Cambodia's First Electric Truck Assembly Plant Officially Opened In Pursat
Japanese manufacturer ZO Motors officially held its groundbreaking ceremony for truck assembly plants in Cambodia on August 18, 2024, on a 10-hectare development site at Krakor Special Economic Zone, Krakor District, Pursat Province.
The ceremony was presided over by HE Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy and during the event, Rattanak thanked ZO Motors for choosing Cambodia as its first investment in ASEAN and Pursat Province as the location for the electric car assembly plant.
He said that at the first stage, the company is capable of producing 3,000-4,000 vehicles but the company aims to increase production to 10,000 units per year for supplying the local market and exporting to ASEAN countries.
A representative from ZO MOTORS quoted by Fresh News stated during the event that the economy of Cambodia is in a state of rapid growth and is currently one of the most active economies in ASEAN.
“We believe that with the continuous development of infrastructure for the logistics sector, as well as efforts to strengthen its position in the regional logistics sector in the near future, Cambodia will be able to transform traditional transportation to fully green energy transport. It is very fortunate that our company chose to come to Cambodia at this appropriate time and is ready to participate in the development of clean energy with the country.”
ZO Motors is a Japanese manufacturer of next-generation energy commercial vehicles and a manufacturer and distributor of zero-emission commercial trucks designed and manufactured in Asia with a global supply chain. ZO Motors is present in China, Japan, and the US.
Cambodia Increases Local Automobile & EV Manufacturing
Cambodia has also launched its first Toyota assembly plant in Q2 2024 with an investment of nearly USD $37 million in the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (PPSEZ).
In July 2024, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD's plan to set up an electric assembly plant in the country, with the capacity to assemble 20,000 units per year for the domestic and international market.
Cambodia Electric Vehicle Market
According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Cambodia currently has a total of 1,614 registered electric cars, 914 electric scooters, and 440 three-wheeled electric vehicles, with the three most popular EV brands being BYD, Toyota, and Tesla.
In July 2024, Cambodia also released the National Policy on Electric Vehicle (EV) Development 2024-2030, which aims to increase the use of electric vehicles in the country.
