Cambodia And Pakistan Establish Joint Trade Committee
The Cambodian Ministry of Commerce and the Pakistani Embassy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Joint Trade Committee between the two countries.
The signing ceremony took place on May 28, 2024, with H.E. CHAM Nimul, the Cambodian Minister of Commerce, and H.E. Zaheeruddin Babar Thaheem, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Cambodia, as the signatories.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister CHAM Nimul stated that this Memorandum of Understanding will significantly contribute to the elevation of the two countries' relations, particularly in the areas of trade and economic cooperation.
She added that the Joint Trade Committee established under this Memorandum will serve as a mechanism that allows both sides to explore ways to create favorable conditions for businesses and investors, diversify their economies, expand production bases, and foster bilateral trade.
With the establishment of the Joint Trade Committee, Cambodia and Pakistan will work together and actively engage the private sectors, including Chambers of Commerce and Business Associations.
The Cambodian Ministry of Commerce's press release further noted that this MOU will also promote trade and economic activities, exchange information on trade, promote small and medium enterprises, and enable standardisation, technical regulation, and conformity assessment procedures for Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) measures to streamline exports.
According to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade, Cambodia's exports to Pakistan were USD $5.98 million in 2022.
Pakistan has an embassy in Phnom Penh, while Cambodia has an honorary consulate in Lahore.
