Nearly half of the world’s natural disasters occur in the Asia-Pacific region resulting in significant social and economic costs. In 2013, the top five major disasters in the region accounted for over 19,000 deaths and nearly US$ 100 billion in economic damage.
Last August, Cambodia’s National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM) reported that 45 people lost their lives when flood waters overcame the Mekong's banks. Nearly 12,000 structures were damaged and millions were lost due to the disruption of commercial activity.
The business community is the first to be affected, but also to respond and to employ their experience, skills and resources to mitigate disasters’ impact. The contribution it makes can have even greater impact through more effective coordination with governmental and humanitarian partners, and in particular through agreement on respective roles in advance of crisis.
To address this issue the American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia will host a luncheon on Tuesday, March 24th with guest speaker Ms.Kristen Knutson from United Nations Office for the Commission of Humanitarian Assistance (UNOCHA). The topic will be:
WORKING TOGETHER TO IMPROVE EMERGENCY
PREPAREDNESS & RESPONSE
