Throughout his distinguished foreign affairs career, Richard L. Armitage has helped shape, direct, and lead U.S. foreign policy dealing with some of history’s greatest events.
Mr. Armitage graduated in 1967 from the U.S. Naval Academy and went on to serve three combat tours with the riverine-advisory forces in Vietnam. As a member of the U.S. Defense Attaché in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), he led the removal of Vietnamese naval assets and personnel from the country before the city fell to North Vietnamese forces.
Mr. Armitage came to Washington in 1975 as a Pentagon consultant, and found himself posted to Tehran, Iran until November, 1976. He has served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia and Pacific Affairs (1981-1983), Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs (1983-1989), Presidential Special Negotiator for the Philippines Military Bases Agreement and Special Mediator for Water in the Middle East (1989-1992), Special Emissary to Jordan during the Gulf War (1991), directed U.S. assistance to the new independent states of the former Soviet Union (1992-1993), and Deputy Secretary of State (2001-2004).
